Pochettino says Tottenham need to improve squad in January transfer window after woeful Carabao Cup exit

A defiant Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham need to improve their squad in the January transfer window after they were sensationally knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester on Tuesday night.

After letting leads slip in back-to-back games, Spurs headed to Colchester looking for a reprieve in the Carabao Cup – but failed miserably as they lost 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

The League Cup was Spurs’ most realistic opportunity of ending their long trophy drought, which stretches back to February 2008 – ironically in the same competition.
After the game Pochettino called for ‘togetherness’ within his Tottenham squad, with whom he ‘lost’ precious time with in pre-season amid uncertainty over the futures of key personnel such as Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen.
“It is because we have the experience in football and the feelings in pre-season I told you,” he said.
“Now it’s about arriving in a difficult situation and we need to recover the time we lost in pre-season. “Maybe our performances are good, but it’s about having a different agenda and we need to build that togetherness.

“We are working so hard to put everyone on the same page. Only we need time.
“January is going to be a good opportunity too to fix this situation and the next one. That is the problem when something happens that you cannot control.

“It means we are human and in football to keep the successful period in football you need to be different every season and find different solutions.”
He added: “Maybe our performances are good but you need this extra, which is mental, connection, it’s energy to be all together, not to have different agendas in the squad.
“We need time again to build that togetherness that you need when you are competing at this level.
“We need to do something different and we will do that.”
