Tottenham have confirmed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new manager.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has been drafted in to save Spurs’ season and take them to the next level after the departure of Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino had been tipped to replace Mourinho in the Man United hotseat, but now the reverse has happened
Pochettino left the club on Tuesday after five-and-a-half years in charge.
He was a victim of his own success, being axed as manager just six months after guiding the club to the Champions League final, with the club 14th in the Premier League.
It was claimed soon after the Argentine’s exit that Spurs chiefs had sounded out Mourinho, with the Portuguese still without a job following his sacking from Manchester United last December.
And the club announced his arrival early on Wednesday morning, with ‘The Special One’ signing a three-year contract as boss.
His first game as Spurs manager is on Saturday at London rivals West Ham – with LIVE and EXCLUSIVE commentary on talkSPORT.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Head Coach on a contract that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season,” a Tottenham statement read.
Jose Mourinho is the new manager of Tottenham
From their statement alone, it is clear why chairman Daniel Levy saw Mourinho as the perfect replacement for Pochettino and build on the Argentine’s success at the club.
“Jose is one of the world’s most accomplished managers having won 25 senior trophies,” the statement continued.
“He is renowned for his tactical prowess and has managed FC Porto, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United.
“He has won a domestic title in a record four different countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain) and is one of only three managers to have won the UEFA Champions League twice with two clubs, FC Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010. He is also a three-time Premier League Champion with Chelsea (2005, 2006, 2015).”
Chairman Levy said Mourinho’s arrival can bring ‘energy and belief to the dressing room’ after a poor start to the campaign under Pocehttino.
“In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football,” said the chairman.
Mourinho was largely criticised for his work at Manchester United – but still led them to a European trophy
“He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”
Speaking on his appointment, Mourinho said: “I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters.
“The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”
It’s taken less than a year for Mourinho to return to the Premier League.
The coach has been working as a regular pundit for Sky Sports since leaving United last year, and has turned down a number of opportunities to coach abroad, including with clubs in China, Spain and Portugal.
